Choose the metal
Start with the surface material and condition. Aluminum and stainless-steel workflows use different wheel and compound pairings.
Professional cutting compounds
Seven compound formulas for removing oxidation, sanding marks, and surface imperfections with airway or specialty buffing wheels. Choose the cut and dryness that fit the job instead of forcing one bar to do everything.

How the system works
Cutting compounds load the working edge of a buffing wheel with abrasive and lubricant. The correct formula helps the wheel remove oxidation and preparation marks while controlling heat, loading, and residue.
Start with the surface material and condition. Aluminum and stainless-steel workflows use different wheel and compound pairings.
Humidity and temperature affect how wet or dry a bar behaves. Match the formula to current shop or field conditions.
Higher cut ratings remove defects faster but require a follow-up coloring or finishing stage for maximum clarity.

Use the full system chart to pair each compound with the appropriate wheel and subsequent polishing stage.
Compare the seven available formulas
Cut is rated from 1 to 10. A higher dryness rating generally means a drier-working bar with less tack; lower numbers indicate a wetter, more lubricated feel.
Medium and fine abrasive grains with a wet, gummy, tacky working character.

Coarse and medium abrasive grains in a noticeably drier fast-cut formula.

A balanced synthetic cut-and-color bar with medium abrasive grains.

High concentration of fine abrasive grains in a very dry cutting bar.

A dry cut-and-color formula with medium and fine abrasive grains.

Coarse, medium, and fine abrasive grains in a dry, broad-cut formula.

The most aggressive option on this page. Use with a Sisal & Cloth Buffing Wheel—not as a general-purpose airway-wheel compound.

Surface preparation
For aluminum wheels with damage or oxidation, a common starting sequence is 180 grit, then 220, then 400. Many aluminum surfaces can move to Tripoli after a consistent 400-grit finish.
Every project is different. The surface condition, metal type, existing finish, damage level, and desired result will determine the preparation steps and starting grit required.
Application process
Install the correct buffing wheel with appropriate safety flanges. Confirm the assembly is secure and within the wheel and machine speed ratings.
Prime a new wheel and remove hardened compound from a loaded wheel so its working edge stays open and effective.
Touch the selected bar lightly to the spinning wheel's working edge. Use a small amount; excess compound creates buildup rather than faster correction.
Keep the wheel moving across the metal, monitor heat, and inspect often. Rake and reapply sparingly when cutting action drops.

Technique reference
Move steadily rather than dwelling in one place. Consistent movement reduces concentrated heat and helps produce a more uniform cut.

Frequently asked questions
Wetter bars feel more lubricated and tacky, while drier bars generally leave less sticky residue and can suit warmer or more humid conditions. Use the dryness rating and climate guidance to choose between formulas with similar cut.
Wild Cherry and Q69 combine meaningful cutting action with improved coloring ability. They can simplify some workflows, but heavily corrected surfaces may still benefit from a separate finishing stage.
Steel Cut is specifically listed for use with a Sisal & Cloth Buffing Wheel. It is the 10/10 extreme-cut option and should not be treated like a general-purpose airway-wheel bar.
Compound removes oxidation and preparation marks, but it cannot reliably erase deep scratches, curb damage, or an inconsistent surface. Sand or surface-prep as needed, then refine the scratch pattern before polishing.
Use a light, brief application to the working edge of the spinning wheel. More compound is not automatically better; overloading can reduce efficiency and increase residue. Rake the wheel when buildup appears.
Color often comes from the natural abrasive ingredients, but pigment may also be added to distinguish formulas. Choose by formula name, cut, dryness, metal compatibility, and climate guidance—not color alone.
